The A.J. Muste Memorial Institute responded to the events of September 11 by instituting an emergency grant program for nonviolent activist groups working against war and to defend civil liberties, with an emphasis on those doing direct organizing and education toward peace. Only projects which involved rapid response to the post-September 11 scenario were eligible for these emergency grants of up to $500. We began by putting $5,000 into the fund, and quickly raised an additional $1,600. Word about the program spread quickly: we received dozens of proposals and were able to make 14 emergency grants by late October. Subsequent contributions to the fund totaling $1,700 allowed us to make four final grants in December before halting the program.
All of the grants made are listed on our September 11 Emergency Grant Fund roster. We are no longer accepting proposals for the September 11 Emergency Grant Fund. For information about our regular grantmaking program, please see our grant guidelines.
